Volunteering at a cat rescue is more than just lending a helping hand—it’s an incredibly fulfilling experience that makes a real difference in the lives of both the cats and those who care for them. At Stour Valley Cat Rescue, every day is an adventure filled with love, laughter, and, of course, plenty of purring. Leading the way is our Stourbridge franchisee, Sharon, whose dedication and passion help keep everything running smoothly. In addition to running her successful The Cat Butler business, she dedicates her time to volunteering at Stour Valley Cat Rescue—a role she finds incredibly fulfilling. From cleaning and feeding to playtime and cuddles, every moment spent at the rescue is both rewarding and heartwarming.

At Stour Valley Cat Rescue, every day brings something new, from caring for kittens to giving older cats the love and attention they deserve. Volunteering at a cat rescue is a truly rewarding experience, and no two days are ever the same. So, what’s it really like to spend a day helping out? Let’s take a look!

Morning Routine: Caring for Our Feline Friends

The day starts early, with a warm welcome from the feline residents—some rubbing up against your legs, others watching curiously from their favourite perches. First on the agenda? Cleaning and feeding! Volunteers roll up their sleeves and get stuck into:

  • Refreshing food and water bowls to keep the cats happy and hydrated.
  • Cleaning litter trays to ensure a fresh and comfortable space.

  • Tidying and mopping the cat rooms—because no one likes a messy home!

  • Grooming and health checks—making sure each cat is looking and feeling their best.

And while all this hard work is going on, there’s always a watchful audience of whiskered faces making sure we’re doing a good job!

Mid-Morning: Playtime & Socialisation

Once the practical jobs are done, it’s time for some of the best bits—playtime and cuddles! Many of the cats at the rescue are waiting for their forever homes, and volunteers play a huge role in keeping them well-socialised. Whether it’s entertaining a mischievous kitten with a feather toy or gently stroking a shy senior to help build their confidence, this part of the day is pure joy.

Playtime fun! These adorable kittens are full of energy, and Sharon is more than happy to keep them entertained

Lunchtime: A Well-Earned Break (With Cats, Of Course!)

A quick sit-down for a coffee and a chat with fellow volunteers is always welcome—but don’t expect to have the chair to yourself for long! Before you know it, a curious cat has hopped onto your lap or is rubbing against your arm, reminding you that break times are meant for cuddles too.

Afternoon: Deliveries & More Helping Paws

The afternoon often brings new tasks—perhaps a donation of food and supplies arrives, and it’s all hands on deck to unload and organise. There might be a visit from a potential adopter coming to meet their future feline friend, or a new cat being welcomed into the rescue. There’s always something happening, keeping everyone on their toes!

A huge thank you for this incredible cat food donation, ensuring the cats stay happy and well-fed. Every box makes a difference

The End of the Day: A Sense of Achievement

Before we know it, the day is winding down. The cats are content, the rescue is clean, and there’s a deep sense of fulfilment that comes from knowing we’ve made a real difference. Every cuddle given, every meal served, every litter tray cleaned—it all adds up to a better life for these wonderful animals.

After a busy day of caring for the cats, there’s nothing better than a snuggle with a fluffy friend. The perfect reward for a volunteer’s hard work
